Six censuses counted a resident population that grew from 3.9 million to 17.1 million. Place of birth was not on the form, so there is no native-born share.
1850–1920
A high foreign-born plateau
Birthplace enters in 1850 at 9.7% foreign-born. From 1860 through 1920 the share stays between 13.2% and 14.8%. The native-born share sits near 85–87% while the country passes 100 million.
1930–1970
The native-born share climbs
Quotas, depression, and war cut immigration. The foreign-born share falls every decade from 1910 to 1970, bottoming at 4.7%. Native-born reaches 95.3%, the high point of the series.
1980–2024
The share returns
After the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, the foreign-born share rises each decade: 6.2% in 1980, 11.1% in 2000, 12.9% in 2010, 14.8% in 2024. Population in the same ACS count is 340.1 million.
